Academic Standards
Old Gem productions for young audiences are designed to help meet Wisconsin and Minnesota's Academic Standards for Theatre and Arts
Wisconsin’s Model Academic Standards for Theatre states:
"Attending live theatre helps students learn appropriate audience skills of listening and responding. Attending live theatre and reading plays also help students learn critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills. These experiences foster the use of imagination and the awareness of a variety of dramatic styles (genres) and cultures."
To meet these goals the Old Gem offers a variety of types of programs:
Audience Participation Plays
Geared towards our youngest audiences, actors often speak directly to the audience and encourage the audience to help tell the story through answering questions or volunteering to help on stage. Audience participation encourages audience engagement. These plays are performed by adult members of the Old Gem Acting Company.
Plays Based on Literature
Geared to a broad audience and may be comedies or dramas. These plays encourage the audience to demonstrate correct audience behavior including careful listening and appropriate responses. They often include student actors as well as adult members of the Old Gem Acting Company.
